There are many sensors in automation systems according to their usage areas. Capacitive sensors, which are one of these sensors, are industrial sensors used to detect the position and distance of conductive and non-conductive materials, without being affected by environmental conditions and without material separation. Another name is proximity (proximity) sensors are called in the market.

Operation Of Capacitive Sensors

Capacitive sensors work by using the capacitance (capacitor) feature to measure. Capacitance; When voltage is applied to two conductors with an insulator between them, (+) and (-) opposite charges accumulate on the surface of these conductive plates, creating a magnetic field.

Objects entering the capacitive field cause the magnetic field to change due to the position they are in, and the sensor detects and produces an output signal. The capacitance is inversely proportional to the distance between the plates. Closer and larger objects cause a smaller current. For smaller and farther objects, the current will be greater. The sensing distance of the sensor also changes according to the size of the object to be detected and the material type. The sensing distances of capacitive sensors are generally less than 2.5 cm.
